“The Best Years” grew out of me turning 60 and realizing I’d entered the final third of my life. Instead of treating it like a slow fade-out, I started to see it as a season of wisdom, gratitude, and unexpected joy—the best years.

I first wrote the lyric as “the best third,” but changed it to “the best years” when I realized “third” doesn’t always sing clearly. The message, though, is unchanged: your story can be richer, braver, and more beautiful in this chapter than you ever imagined.

It’s a wake‑up call about what happens when we trade local fields and ranches for distant, industrial supply chains—and what that means for how we will feed a growing country. This is a call to action: to support family‑owned farms, to buy local while we still can, and to remember that protecting our rural communities isn’t just about preserving small‑town life—it’s about safeguarding our future food security.

Tribute to My Dad

My dream of starting this offgrid homestead on my own scared him, but he fully supported my dream. He called me every day to check up on the status of my projects, the weather, and rural life. I still miss him.
